Wine is not just a tasty beverage, it’s a vital part of the local culture and identity. And right now, local wineries in Croatia are thriving like never before!

Moreover, Zagreb is situated within the larger Croatian Uplands wine region, encompassing sub-regions like Moslavina, Prigorje-Bilogora, Plešivica, and Pokuplje. Here, vineyards are scattered throughout the countryside, offering a unique glimpse into the meticulous winemaking process – from carefully tending to the grapes to the delicate aging process in traditional amphorae.

You’ll get an exclusive front-row seat to the winemaking process by visiting these wineries, culminating in some of Croatia’s finest wines.

Let’s uncover 7 must-visit wineries near Zagreb!

Šember winery

Šember winery is a family-owned winery located in the charming village of Donji Pavlovčani near Jastrebarsko. The Šember family has been dedicated to producing outstanding grapes and wines deeply rooted in tradition for generations.

One of their most notable wines is their exquisite sparkling wine made from Riesling macerated in amphora, Qvevri. It’s a true masterpiece that will impress even the most discerning wine connoisseurs.

But the Šember winery offers more than just its sparkling wine. They also provide a selection of other premium wines known for their exceptional quality. Visiting their winery is a must for anyone who loves wine and wants to experience the passion and expertise of the Šember family firsthand.

You’ll have the opportunity to taste their wines, learn about their production process, and soak in the beautiful surroundings.

Korak winery

Source: Korak winery

Nestled on the hilly slopes of Plešivica, hour drive from Zagreb, the Korak family has been dedicated to producing the highest quality wines and developing their artistic vision for winemaking.

While the Chardonnay sur lie is the house’s flagship wine, the fresh and aromatic Sauvignon and lively Riesling are equally delightful. And let’s remember the recent addition of Pinot Noir, one of the best red wines in Croatia.

Each harvest brings unique and distinctive wines that are true works of art, with small batch production and a story behind every bottle.

But Korak is more than just a winery – it’s also the name of the fine dining restaurant on the property. Spearheaded by the young and exceptionally talented chef, the restaurant aims to showcase the best of local producers and the region’s gastronomic heritage. With a focus on seasonality and a touch of nature in every dish, this is the first fine dining experience of its kind in the region and a right step forward in Plešivica’s thriving food and wine scene.

Tomac winery

There is another family-owned winery, the Tomac winery, located in Jastrebarsko. The winemaking tradition has been passed down through generations for over 100 years, and their Chardonnay and sparkling wines have received recognition abroad.

The Tomac family was among the first Croatian winemakers who used the ancient Georgian winemaking tradition of macerating and aging grapes in large clay vessels – qvevri, just as it was done in the cradle of winemaking in Georgia thousands of years ago.

This unique method has made them pioneers in the world of winemaking. Their sparkling wine, Amphora Brut Nature, has pushed the boundaries and gained global recognition. In fact, in 2016, it was the only Croatian wine to be included in Decanter magazine’s prestigious list of the 75 most important wines of the year. Every wine lover visiting Zagreb should visit this renowned Plešivica winery and their newly built winery.

Jagunić winery

Dominik Jagunić is a talented winemaker who crafts wines that are both unique and bursting with flavor. He has a particular knack for making macerated and sparkling wines, which are truly special. One of his most popular creations is the Three Stars sparkling wine, named after the three amazing vineyards where the grapes are grown. These vineyards produce a variety of grapes, including Chardonnay, Riesling, and Plavec Žuti, which all contribute to the wine’s one-of-a-kind taste.

Dominik’s Traminer Red Amber is another standout wine known for its beautiful amber color and rich flavor.

In 2000, they renowned their old family cellar and started building a tasting room near the winery. Soon after, the tasting room expanded to accommodate 80 people, and an outdoor terrace with 40 seats was added.

They also began offering local specialties from the Plešivica sub-region. They try to produce all the ingredients themselves or source them from local producers. Everything is fresh and seasonal, so when combined with the surrounding greenery, vineyards, and wines, visitors can expect the ultimate wine-tasting experience!

In the world of wines, where tradition and history often reign supreme, a discovery has been made that could make for an exciting film! After years of painstaking research and DNA testing of wine grapes from across the globe, the origin of Zinfandel has finally been uncovered. Zinfandel was believed to be an American grape with no known origins outside the United States.

Introduction

For decades, wine experts have been baffled by its mysterious origins. But after painstaking research, the truth has finally been revealed in a shocking twist.

You won’t want to miss the incredible story of how the birthplace of this beloved grape was finally uncovered. Read more to find out the mystery of Zinfandel’s true origin!

The DNA search for Zinfandel origin

A group of American wine producers and scientists have been working together to unravel the mystery of the true origins of Zinfandel grapes, which have been growing in Northern California since the 1960s.

From the 1970s to the 1990s, a conversation about the striking similarities between Zinfandel grapes and one of the most popular Croatian grape varieties called Plavac Mali started to gain momentum. The researchers wanted to uncover the connection between Plavac Mali, Zinfandel, and Primitivo to shed light on the grape that became a uniquely American wine.

Mike Grgich, the co-founder of Grgich Hills Estate in Napa, has long believed that Zinfandel vines in California resembled Plavac Mali in his native Croatia. His suspicions were confirmed in 1967 when a plant pathologist at UC Davis discovered that Primitivo in Italy closely resembled Zinfandel and that Plavac Mali, an indigenous Croatian variety, shared characteristics with both Zinfandel and Primitivo.

“Looking at the vines, I wondered, am I in California or Croatia” he laughed during a scene in the film Dossier Zinfandel.

The University of Zagreb in Croatia provided samples of Plavac Mali to support the research, which included DNA testing. The results showed that Plavac Mali was not Zinfandel.

Dr. Carole Meredith, a grape geneticist at UC Davis, has been closely monitoring the Zinfandel mystery. Dr. Meredith’s team has already identified the parentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Syrah, among others. The team’s latest research involved investigating ancient vineyards in Croatia, where they searched for the original vine that gave rise to Zinfandel.

In 2001. Dr. Carole and the Croatian researchers discovered an old vine called Crljenak Kaštelanski on a cliff near the Dalmatian Coast. Genetic testing in California confirmed that Crljenak Kaštelanski (the red grape of Kaštela in translation) was genetically identical to Primitivo and Zinfandel, revealing its ancestral home. Genetic testing in California confirmed that Croatia’s Crljenak Kaštelanski, a vine on the verge of extinction due to its vulnerability to fungal disease, is the native form of the popular American grape, Zinfandel.

In a vineyard of six thousand vines, only eight Crljenak vines have been found, remnants of a mixed planting by winemaker Ivica Radunić’s grandfather. Further evidence has been found in two other locations 40 kilometers south of the found vines, where vines genetically identical to Zinfandel have also been discovered.

The discovery of five ancient vines, locally known as Pribidrag, in a garden above Omiš town, and at least ten Tribidrag (the oldest Croatian name for Zinfandel) vines growing in the town of Mimice, has added weight to the theory that the Dalmatian region of Croatia could be the true birthplace of Zinfandel. It is estimated that the Tribidrag has been known since the 15th century.

The team behind wineandmore.com created amazing video content that explains the drama surrounding Zinfandel’s origin.

Zinfandel in Croatia

The discovery suggests that Zinfandel has been growing in the region for many centuries, but its thin skin and vulnerability to rot made it less popular in Dalmatian climates. The study also revealed that Plavac Mali, the most widely planted red wine grape in Dalmatia, is a descendant of Zinfandel and an old Dalmatian variety called Dobričić. The research shed new light on the history of the Zinfandel grape and the evolution of grape varieties in the Dalmatian region.

An old grape variety that was widely planted in the Dalmatian region and used to produce popular wines locally and regionally has been found to have several other names.

Known as Crljenak Kaštelanski in Croatia,

the grape variety was also called Pribidrag in the Omis area,

Kratošija in Montenegro,

and Tribidrag was the oldest and most widespread name used for this economically significant variety in Dalmatia since the 15th century.

Although the grape’s growth in Croatia declined due to a phylloxera outbreak in the 19th century, growers switched to Plavac Mali, a grape variety better suited to the climate and growing conditions.

Zinfandel in Italy

Austin Goheen, a professor at the prestigious University of California at Davis, discovered in the late 60s. While visiting Apulia in Southern Italy, Goheen tasted Primitivo and noticed similarities between its aroma and flavor profiles and those of Zinfandel. Primitivo got its name from being an early ripening grape with “primo,” meaning first and early in Italian.

Zinfandel in California

According to records, the earliest mention of Zinfandel was documented in Boston in 1832. However, its journey to California occurred in the mid-19th century.

The grape was brought to the east coast of the United States in the 1820s from Klosterneuburg, near Vienna. This royal collection contained plants from all parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which included Croatia.

Despite being under-appreciated on the East coast, Zinfandel thrived in California’s climate and soil, leading to increased plantings. Today, Zinfandel is the third-leading wine grape variety in California.

Zinfandel remains a dominant force in the wine industry of California, as affirmed today. Napa Valley and Sonoma County produce some of the most renowned Zinfandel wines.

Primitivo vs. Zinfandel

The California Zinfandel and the Italian Primitivo may be genetically similar, but there are key differences in their taste and aroma. California Zins tend to be bolder in body and alcohol, with jammy fruit aromas and vanilla, cocoa, and cinnamon notes, depending on the French or American oak treatment.

In contrast, Italian Primitivo is more restrained, with earthy and concentrated flavors of wild blackberry shining through. These differences are due in part to the timing of the grape harvest, with California winemakers waiting longer to develop more sugars and ripeness.

There is no denying Zin is boozy fun. You can expect black and red fruit aromas of blackberry, black currant, and cranberries. There are also earthy and black pepper notes on the nose.

Crljenak vs. Zinfandel

Crljenak, a top-quality red wine known for its deep color, big tannins, and notes of dark berries, is gaining popularity among wine lovers. While it is often compared to California Zinfandel and Italian Primitivo due to its genetic relationship, experts note that variations in terroir and production methods create differences in taste and aroma.

Crljenak, Croatian Zinfandel, tends to be fruitier and contains more tannins than California Zinfandel, with a distinctive southern Dalmatian character resulting from the region’s climate, soil, and winemaking traditions.

Croatian Zinfandel revival

With its newfound claim to fame, the grape’s fate began to change. Some estimates are about 250 acres of Crljenak Kaštelanski (about a half-million vines) have been planted in the meantime.

The discovery of this connection sparked renewed interest in Crljenak Kaštelanski in Croatia, and many winemakers began to plant the grape variety once again. The main region where Zinfandel is grown in Croatia is Dalmatia. This coastal region is home to some of the country’s most famous vineyards, including those in the Pelješac peninsula and the island of Hvar. Winemakers in Dalmatia produce Zinfandel wines similar in style to those from California, with bold fruit flavors and high alcohol content.

FAQ About Zinfandel wines

What is Croatian Zinfandel called?

In Croatia, Zinfandel is called: Tribidrag, Pribidrag, and Crljenak Kaštelanski and is grown in the Dalmatia wine region. In Italy, Zinfandel is called Primitivo and is grown mainly in the Puglia region. Different producers also label it as Kratošija in Montenegro and North Macedonia. Despite other names, these wines are genetically equal, with slight differences in aroma and taste depending on the vineyard location and vinification.

Tribidrag, the oldest recorded name for the Zinfandel grape variety, is now recognized as the prime name according to the rule of anteriority.

Jancis Robinson, the co-author of Wine Grapes, confirms this in the book’s entry for Zinfandel by simply stating, “See Tribidrag.”

What Zinfandel tastes like?

This grape variety has a bright, full-bodied flavor with hints of spices such as black pepper, cloves, and anise. Zinfandel is typically described as having intense berry flavors such as blackberry, raspberry, and cherry.

Where to taste Zinfandel in Croatia?

The Zinfandel grape, which was long considered an American native, actually has Croatian origins. The grape is flourishing in various regions of Dalmatia, including Omiš, Komarna, Hvar, Brač, Pelješac, and Konavle, where over two dozen wineries produce Zinfandel. Visitors to the Kaštela region near Split can taste domestic wines and learn about the Crljenak Kaštelanski grape, the original Zinfandel, in family-run wineries like Bedalov, Vuina, and Matela winery. Other producers are Rizman winery in Komarna region, Stina winery in Brač island, Benmosche winery and Korta Katarina winery in Pelješac peninsula, Grabovac winery in Imotski and Mimica winery from Omiš.

Or you can easily order some Croatian Zinfandel from wineandmore.com, the biggest Croatian online wine shop with delivery to EU-wide, UK, USA, Switzerland, and Norway.

Zinfandel food pairing?

When pairing wine with food, Zinfandel is a popular choice that goes well with meat, particularly beef or duck. In addition, Zinfandel is an excellent complement to the traditional Croatian dish pašticada, which consists of beef cooked with plums in red wine. Whether you’re enjoying a hearty meal at home or dining out, Zinfandel is a versatile wine that can enhance the flavors of your favorite meat dishes.

What wine is Zinfandel?

Zinfandel is a red grape variety, but it’s also used to make a wine known as White Zinfandel. In California, Zinfandel thrives due to the region’s favorable climate, which boasts dry and sunny summers and falls with little to no rainfall, preventing the grapes from rotting.

This allows for the production of abundant, top-quality grapes with good acidity. Zinfandel’s versatility also contributes to its success in California, as it can yield a range of quality wines, including rosés, light- and full-bodied reds, and late harvests.

With the right vineyards and winemaking techniques, Zinfandel can produce rich, fruity wines that are unparalleled. White Zinfandel, a sweet pink wine made from the grape, is a popular choice for those starting in the world of wine due to its simple, peachy flavor and high sugar content.

Conclusion

Back in 2001. DNA-profiling techniques have uncovered the surprising origins of California’s popular grape variety, Zinfandel. It has been traced back to its Croatian roots, specifically to the grape variety called Crljenak Kaštelanski, which is grown in Kaštela in Dalmatia.

This discovery has sparked a renaissance of interest in Crljenak as winemakers explore its connection to the American favorite. Zinfandel was once known as California’s “mystery grape” because its origins were unknown.

Croatian wine producers are looking to capitalize on the newfound popularity of the Zinfandel grape, which was long thought to be of Californian origin. The discovery of Zinfandel’s true roots has brought newfound attention to Croatia’s rich wine heritage, which dates back to ancient times.

So go ahead, take a sip, savor the taste, and get to know Croatian wine like an old friend. Who knows, it might just become your new favorite!

Introduction

Source: Rizman winery

Oh, where do we even begin to count the ways we adore Croatian wines? From the country’s stunning coastline to its lush hills and valleys, Croatia’s unique geography and climate provide the perfect conditions for producing some seriously delicious wines. So, without further ado, here are 10 reasons why we just can’t get enough of Croatian wine.

Because of stunning native varieties

Source: Vines in Stari Grad Plain, Around the World in 80 Harvests

Croatian grape varieties are as diverse as the country itself, offering a tantalizing array of flavors and aromas. They are like a quirky cast of characters, each with their unique personality and flavor profile. One minute you’re sipping on a crisp white wine that’s as refreshing as a dip in the Adriatic Sea, and the next, you’re indulging in a bold and spicy red that packs a serious punch. It’s like a wine-tasting adventure that will take your taste buds on a wild ride through Croatia’s picturesque vineyards and idyllic countryside.

And let me tell you, once you’ve experienced the magic of Croatian wine, there’s no going back. You’ll be swept off your feet faster than you can say “Živjeli!” (that’s “cheers” in Croatian, by the way). It’s like falling in love with a country through your taste buds. And who could blame you? With such an array of tantalizing flavors and aromas, it’s hard not to get lost in the romance of it all.

But here’s the thing, it doesn’t stop there. Once you’ve tasted the nectar of the gods that is Croatian wine, you’ll be itching to explore the small country that produces such diverse and delicious grape varieties. From the stunning coastline and river basins next to the Danube river to the rolling hills of Croatian Uplands and Slavonia region, there’s so much to see and do in Croatia. And let’s be honest, there’s no better way to experience a country than by sipping on a glass of its finest wine.

Because they are hard to pronounce

Are you tired of sticking to the same old grapes like Riesling, Merlot, and Sauvignon? Well, we’ve got some tongue-twisting Croatian wines that will blow your mind (and your taste buds)! You might think you’re a pro at pronouncing wine names such as Merlot, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon, but have you ever tried saying Bogdanuša, Graševina, or Žlahtina? Trust us, you’re going to need some serious practice (and plenty of wine tastings) to get those names right.

After you taste some hard-to-pronounce varieties, get ready to impress your friends and family with your newfound knowledge of these seriously delicious and unique wines. We promise it’s worth the effort – and the laughter – that comes with mastering these tricky names. So give it a go, and let’s raise a glass to the exciting and diverse world of Croatian wine!

Because top quality wines are actually affordable

While Italy, Spain, and France dominate the world of wine, a hidden gem has emerged from Croatia’s stunning regions. Despite being lesser known to consumers, Croatian wines are making waves for their exceptional quality and affordable prices. Don’t be fooled by the unfamiliarity of Croatian wines, as many factors contribute to the pricing of wine, including land and production costs, some of the most awarded Croatian wines still have prices that are shockingly affordable for all wine lovers in a search for best-kept wine secrets. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to indulge in top-quality wines without breaking the bank!

Because Croatian cuisine

The land of continental and seaside wonders! And as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got cuisine and wine culture to match! Where else can you go from a juicy wiener schnitzel and a crisp Graševina to freshly caught fish and a rich Plavac Mali in just a few hours? It’s like a culinary adventure in the blink of an eye! And let’s talk about the wine, shall we?

It’s like a symphony of flavors exploding in your mouth, and you’ll be tapping your toes with every bite and sip. From juicy grilled meats to fresh seafood, there’s a Croatian wine to elevate every dish to the next level. And don’t even get me started on the truffles! Have you ever tried truffle pasta with a glass of Croatian red wine? It’s like a party in your mouth that you never want to end.

So, if you’re a foodie and a wine lover, book a one-way ticket to Croatia and experience the best of both worlds – continental and seaside – in every delicious bite and sip!

Because of the amazing diversity

Source: Zure winery

Diversity of wine, people, food, varieties, climate, appellations, soil, everything! And a diversity of winemakers who are like superheroes of the wine world, armed with respect to tradition, modern approach, and local varieties, ready to save the day one sip at a time. They put their heart and soul into every bottle, creating wines bursting with personality and a true sense of place.

It’s like they’ve managed to bottle up the Croatian sunshine and sprinkle it into every glass, leaving you feeling warm, fuzzy, and just a little bit tipsy. And the best part? There’s wine for everyone! Whether you’re a fan of crisp whites that make you feel like you’re drinking liquid clouds, bold reds as smooth as silk, or something in between (like dessert wine) that hits that sweet spot just right. Plus, let’s not forget the affordability factor. You won’t have to sell your firstborn to enjoy a bottle of these babies. So go ahead and raise a glass to those Croatian winemakers and the diversity they keep safe and put inside every bottle.

Because they are sometimes mixed with water

Croatia is a country that takes great pride in its wine culture, with a long history of producing high-quality wines. However, it might surprise some that Croatians also have a tradition of mixing wine with water. This may seem sacrilegious to some wine lovers, but for Croatians, it is a way to enjoy their wine more refreshingly and lightly, especially during the hot summer months.

The mix of still or sparkling water with white wine, known as ‘gemišt,’ is especially popular in the continental part of Croatia, while ‘bevanda’ – a mix of red wine and plain water – is more common in coastal areas.

While some may scoff at the idea of diluting their wine, for Croatians, it is a way to enjoy the taste of their beloved wines more casually and relaxedly, often enjoyed with friends and family over a leisurely meal. So, the next time you find yourself in Croatia, be sure to give these wine-water concoctions a try – who knows, you just might find a new favorite way to enjoy your wine!

Because it’s the ultimate wine experience to share

Source: Voštinić Klasnić winery

Croatian wines are like the cool kids who sit at the back of the classroom, quietly sipping on their deliciousness while everyone else is busy drooling over the usual. But let me tell you, once you’ve tasted Croatian wines, you’ll never go back to the same old boring bottles.

Why keep all the fun to yourself? Grab your wine-loving squad and head back to Croatia to fully experience the country’s wines’ beauty. Take them in the stunning scenery, indulge in the delicious food, and sip on some of the world’s most underrated wines.

While sharing your experience, impress your friends with your newfound insider knowledge of this hidden gem. You can become the hipster of the wine world, dropping knowledge about the crisp white wines of Istria or the robust reds of Dalmatia like it’s no big deal. And when your friends inevitably ask where you learned about these fantastic wines, you can nonchalantly shrug and say, “Oh, just a little trip to Croatia. No biggie.”

Because of mesmerizing vineyards

Source: Daniel Pavlinovic/CNTBPeljesac

No, we cannot forget the stunning views of the Croatian vineyards, where the grapes are grown to perfection. It’s like a fairytale land that produces liquid gold.

First up, we have Dingač, and let me tell you, this place is grape-tastic! You know a vineyard is a real deal when it has its protected name. Dingač Plavac Mali is one of the few wines that can boast of being named solely after the vineyard where it’s produced. Dingač Vineyard is the pride and joy of Dalmatia, and rightly so! It’s nestled in the southern part of the Pelješac Peninsula, where the land is as steep as the prices of designer shoes. All in all, if you’re ever in the area, you have to check out Dingač Vineyard. It’s a must-see, must-sip kind of place!

Next, Hvar, the land of sun, sea, and seemingly never-ending vines. They say that even the grapes have a permanent tan on this Croatian island! And who can blame them when they’ve been soaking up that Mediterranean sunshine for over 2,000 years? That’s right, 400 BC. The beauty of this historic vineyard is as intoxicating as the wine it produces. So, if you find yourself on Hvar, raise a glass (or two) to the ancient vines that have brought joy to generations of wine lovers.

Wait, there’s more! Bucavac vineyard, where the wine is as delicious as the story behind it! This vineyard is like a survivor of an adventure movie, battling against harsh weather conditions and erosion into the sea. But the landowners here are no ordinary humans, they have built stone pockets that are like a fortress to hold the vines safe and preserve their value. These folks don’t mess around, they take their wine seriously. And that’s evident in every sip of the Babić variety they cultivate here. It’s like an orchestra in your mouth, with each flavor note ideally in sync. No wonder the United Nations lobby in New York has a picture of this vineyard on display as a monument to human toil. It’s like a symbol of hope for all of us that anything is possible no matter how challenging the circumstances are, with the right attitude, dedication, and a good bottle of wine!

If you’re a wine enthusiast looking for a new destination to add to your bucket list, look no further than the Plešivica amphitheater vineyards. Nestled in the gorgeous Plešivica wine region near Zagreb, grapes in those vineyards know how to put on a show. They’re so good at adapting to colder climates that you’ll want to give them a standing ovation. Rhein Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay are just a few of the incredible wine varieties cultivated here, and they’re all sure to make your taste buds dance.

Make sure to pay a visit to the historical town of Momjan. Trust me, you won’t be able to resist the allure of the aromatic Croatian wines cultivated there. But let’s talk about the real star of the show – Momjan Muscat. This wine is so protected that you’d think it had its bodyguard. And for a good reason! Once you taste it, you’ll never want to drink anything else. It’s like falling in love – sweet, intoxicating, and impossible to forget. It’s the wine you want to curl up with on a rainy day or share with your closest friends over a gourmet meal.

And last but not least, Kutjevo wine region vineyards have some serious character! Situated higher up in a forest on volcanic rock. Talk about a location with some pizzazz! And let’s not forget about the wine – oh no, we can’t forget about the wine. With its minerality and distinctive taste, this vineyard’s Graševinas will surely tickle your taste buds in all the right ways.

Because everybody wants to come back to it

Source: Jakovac winery

And why wouldn’t they? Did we mention they’re delicious? Because, seriously, we can’t get enough of these wines. It’s like tasting a little bit of heaven in a glass. And let’s be honest, who wouldn’t want to return for more? I mean, have you ever tried them? They’re so delicious that they’ll make your taste buds dance like no one’s watching.

And let’s be honest, why settle for boring old wines when you can have Croatia’s flavorful and unique taste? The country created a special concoction that screams “drink me, I’m amazing!” And we have to agree, we can’t get enough of these wines. It’s like we’re in a never-ending love affair with them. They’re the kind of wine you would take home to meet your parents, who would approve. They’re simply that good.

So, cheers to Croatia, the land of delicious wines and breathtaking views.

Because Croatians love it

If you are in Croatia tasting their wine, buckle up because you’re in for a ride! Croatians are known for their warmth and hospitality, and if you’re lucky enough to be offered a glass of their wine, prepare to be showered with their generosity.

These people are incredibly proud of their wine, especially those made of native varieties (of which there are 130), and they love sharing it with everyone – including strangers!

But before you even get to the wine, there’s a little pre-game warm-up with some rakija, which is basically plum brandy – and it’s delicious! Once the rakija has done its job of loosening you up, the wine will start flowing. And let’s face it, it would be rude not to have at least two glasses of wine to show your appreciation for their hospitality. If you’re lucky enough to be invited for a meal, be prepared to polish off four or five glasses of wine. And when it’s time to leave, don’t even think about turning down that last glass ‘for the road.’ It’s not going to happen, these wine-loving Croatians won’t let you off that easily!

Croatians know how to have a good time and want to make sure you have a good time too. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride! So go ahead, have that extra glass (or two), because trust me, you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Villa Korta Katarina & Winery is an exquisite property where every detail has been carefully crafted to ensure an unforgettable experience. As a proud member of Relais & Chateaux, this exclusive villa is nestled amidst breathtaking scenery and offers a range of world-class amenities with exquisite decor that exudes elegance and sophistication. A dream destination for those who cherish the finest wines and savor gourmet cuisine as well as stunning panoramic views.

The story behind Villa Korta Katarina & Winery is as captivating as the property itself. Lee and Penny Anderson, two Americans who fell in love with Croatia’s welcoming culture during a humanitarian mission, decided to invest in the country’s hospitality industry.

Nestled in the heart of Orebić on the Pelješac peninsula, this unique building boasts elegant stone facades that rise above the beach and sea. From the meticulously designed facilities to the delectable gastronomic offerings, you’ll experience the perfect blend of comfort and sophistication. And all of this in a breathtaking natural setting that’s sure to leave you in awe.

Guests of the Korta Katarina winery, located next to the Villa, can also enjoy unique gastronomic menus paired with Korta Katarina’s top wines produced from popular native varieties such as Pošip and Plavac Mali, with prior notice.

A visit to Korta Katarina Winery is not just a journey into the world of wine but a journey through time and celebrating the area’s cultural heritage. The villa and winery take their name from the old Orebić fenced captain’s villas, known as “korte,” which were once an integral part of the local architecture. Korta Katarina continues to honor this legacy by incorporating the name and style of these magnificent villas into their architecture and design.

The Story Behind Dingač

Source: Skaramuča

Dingač is the stretch of coastal land between Podobuče and Trstenik. This 7-kilometer area is where Plavac Mali grapes – a varietal unique to Dalmatia – thrive thanks to an ideal combination of soil composition and climate conditions. When it comes to wine from this region, nothing but these privileged grapes grown between mentioned two locations have the privilege to be called Dingač!

Potomje is located in the middle of the peninsula and is the location of perhaps the most attractive vineyards in Pelješac. On one side, the vineyards are protected by a stone massif from the cold winds, and on the other, they descend steeply towards the sea and are thus perfectly positioned towards the sun.

Picture 1. Dingač wine map

Source: Wine & More

The area is not very accessible but a small, rural road runs the length of the region. Also, at Potomje is the entrance to a one-lane tunnel through the mountain that winemakers paid to build in 1973 in order to transport grapes directly. This replaced the old system of using donkeys or mules to carry harvested grapes over the 400 m high pass of the mountain, though some winemakers continued to use them, as well as horses, during the harvest time because no machines or tractors can come on those steep slopes where truly fascinating vineyards reside.

The donkey has long been a faithful companion to Dalmatian laborers, making it an iconic symbol of the region. Wineries such as Matuško and Dingač co-op proudly display this distinctive animal on their labels – not only for its symbolism but also because the donkey is a living embodiment of hard work and loyalty.

Source: Branimir Kvartuč/HANZA MEDIA

For centuries, Dingač wine has been renowned for its unparalleled value. Even before the 15th century, it commanded a price tag 3-4 times higher than even other top-quality Dalmatian wines!

If you’ve ever wondered why Dingač is so famous, here’s the answer: it was officially recognized as Croatia and former Yugoslavia’s first protected wine appellation in 1962. While private winemaking wasn’t allowed at that time, the demand in the country and abroad for Plavac Mali from the Dingač microregion was very high. It caused frequent falsifications to the detriment of the reputation of this famous wine.

A decree from the Ministry of Agriculture declared that only Pelješac island’s Agricultural Cooperative (also known as “Dingač”) could produce wines under the name – Dingač – giving us our very own Croatian classic!

Key Takeaway: Dingač was officially recognized as Croatia and former Yugoslavia’s first protected wine appellation in 1962. As in the rest of Pelješac, Plavac Mali is “the king of red wines” in the Dingač microregion as well.

Located on the picturesque Dalmatian coast, Dingač is one of the world’s most iconic wine regions. Its unique terroir, topography, and soil composition make for a distinctive flavor profile when compared to other wines from around the globe.

With its 45° slope inclination, vineyards planted from sea level up to 300 m, up to 2800 hours of sunshine annually, and rugged karst landscape ensuring minimal surface erosion – it’s no surprise that reds are thriving in this dramatic Mediterranean setting!

Source: Skaramuča

Soil characteristics and human impact

If you ever wondered what makes the beautiful vineyards of Dingač so unique, it’s their vineyards! Throughout centuries, in order to protect the soil from erosion, local inhabitants build terraces, thus made possible to cultivate grape vines in those locations.

Larger stones were used to build terrace walls (transl. suhozidi) while smaller stones and pebbles were taken outside of the future vineyards. All this allowed for lushness and wild Mediterranean vegetation growth in summer dry months which served as an indicator of quality terrain in a particular location.

Soil is essential to the magical nectar that we know as Dingač wine. The terroir of this Croatian delight was formed on a unique base of pebble detritus deposits made on the mother substrate of Quaternary karst, in an incredible range of soil inclinations from 10°-60°!

Despite the stunning views overlooking the sea below, tending vines and harvesting grapes can be quite treacherous due to dangerously steep slopes reaching over 45 degrees at altitudes well above 1,000 feet! No easy feat for any vintner wanting to get their hands on those exclusive grapes!

The soil is skeletal due to containing mostly white pebbles and small stones on the surface of the ground – which forms an excellent thermal insulator. The majority of soil is comprised of 75% pebbles, with 25% made up of gravel and finer stones including sand (about 40%), dust (30%), and clay (30%). This combination makes for an extremely permeable substrate that optimizes heat regulation on the ground level.

You could call Dingač soil a magical blend of various beneficial components like

potassium as one of the most important factors influencing the quality of grapes, and ultimately wines,

moderately rich in humus,

nitrogen,

low in phosphorus.

All are carefully balanced to provide the perfect mix for creating world-renowned grapes and wine. Its slightly neutral or mildly alkaline reaction combined with sufficient quantities of calcium, sulfur, and boron but a lack of magnesium gives it an ideal composition that has been treasured by local winemakers!

Climate conditions

With the Plavac Mali variety cultivated under Dingač and Postup’s extreme conditions, winemakers have a challenge on their hands. The soil quality and steep inclination with southern exposure combined with its Mediterranean climate prove difficult to work in – an hour of hard labor at other vineyards can be three times as long in these unique regions!

Dingač is nestled in a perfect mild Mediterranean climate and protected by two mountain ranges from northern winds, while the deep sea on the south side serves as an ideal heat regulator.

In winter, it warms up air temperatures and in summer, relieves extreme heat levels. The region’s slope of the terrain creates ideal conditions for grapevines to thrive by allowing maximum exposure to sunlight with reflected rays from the sea surface. Pebble-strewn soils help keep their roots cool while stone walls (suhozidi) and rocky massif above the vineyards offer maximum use of solar radiation.

Key Takeaway: Dingač is an appellation from which any wine enthusiast can taste some of the world’s most exquisite red wines made from Plavac Mali! Due to its fascinating terroir, Dingač is also the first, authentic, and most famous Croatian grand cru!

Plavac Mali from Dingač

Plavac Mali (pronounced Plah-vahts Mah-lee) or simply Plavac, as it is called on Pelješac, has been a Dalmatian red grape variety since ancient times, widespread on the coast and on the islands of central and southern Dalmatia.

Plavac Mali (in translation “little blue”) grapes thrive under the most extreme of conditions and nowhere is this more true than in Dingač and Postup wine-growing microregions.

The vineyards faced southwest, which means they here experience what’s known as triple insolation:

an intense mix of direct sunlight, intensified due to limited rainfall,

sea-reflected sun rays from a nearby coastline and vineyards on 45° inclined slopes,

plus additional light reflection from white rock surfaces beneath the vines!

These unique bunches of Plavac Mali vine hang onto rocky hillsides, their roots reaching depths up to 10 meters. This allows them to draw nourishment and hold strong against the harshest conditions – even in severe drought periods or heaviest rainfalls due to natural drainage created by the earth’s tilt as natural drainage.

The results are strong, full-bodied red wines with a massive bouquet that resembles the great wines of the genre: Sangiovese or Zinfandel. The difference is that the flavor of the best bottles of Dingač is, some would argue, more robust, both in taste and smell.

One of its greatest virtues is drought resistance and resistance to most major fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew. It produces wines with a medium to the high concentration of alcohol and a medium to low concentration of total acids, with a characteristic varietal aroma and taste. In extremely favorable positions such as the Dingač vineyards, it produces top wines.

Plavac Mali is essential to some delicious full-bodied red wines that can be overwhelming due to naturally high tannins and lower acidity levels unless carefully crafted by experienced winemakers through traditional techniques:

balanced vineyard practices and

careful extraction methods.

Dingač is a full-bodied, mouthwatering wine with intense and concentrated aromas of ripe fruit. Under the direction of the best winemakers, it can open subtle sensory hints that can remind you of sagebrush from the Dalmatian Coast or herbs found in abundance on the Pelješac Peninsula!

In most Dingač vineyards, cultivation occurs entirely ecologically, resulting in robust wines boasting rich extracts and nice alcohol content.
